New to Sailing?

It’s always good to hear from potential new members wishing to take up sailing for the first time. If you are wondering what is involved in getting started, see Andy's 3 part article Getting Kitted Out.

With regard to initial sail training we have a few alternatives to consider. The club offers training for juniors and those wishing to return to sailing; these are run by our more experienced members and start in May running through the summer. The training is at beginner and intermediate level and can be in Club boats or the member’s own. We have Wayfarers, Oppies and OK’s available.

These courses are run on a voluntary basis by members for members so you will need to join the club in order to qualify. Once a member you could opt to buy a small dinghy and take a gentle approach at getting into sailing with the assistance of some of the club members.  Training

We have a number of members who are happy to take you out in one of the club Wayfarers or one of their own boats before you commit to buying your own boat.

We have just published a series of dates for family sailing Saturdays (one per month starting in May) these are aimed at fun sailing and getting some of our inexperienced members on the water. These start at 1pm, sailing through the afternoon - members bring picnics and refreshments. Late afternoon we spark up the BBQ’s allowing you to cook your own food followed by a good relaxing evening as the sun goes down over the reservoir. Social Calendar

For those wishing for a formal training course we recommend Alton Water near Brantham (IP9 2RY). They offer full time courses at various levels by qualified RYA instructors and are offered with full RYA certification. Alton Water is a superb facility however we find that local people often complete their training and then join Ardleigh Sailing Club. Alton Water does not have a similar ‘family’ club offering and is less convenient for access from the Colchester area.

As a suggestion you may like to come to the club on a day we are running events. Please see the ‘What’s On’ calendars. Members will happily take some time out to introduce you to other members and show you around our facilities.

Please contact any of the officers on the Contact us page if you would like further information or to make any arrangements.
